My previous response about two kernels is a bit silly. If you are going to take the trouble to rewrite the function evaluator to send a progress report to a second kernel, then it would be easier to send instead the progress report to a local plot, as demonstrated in the following notebook. 

I have not addressed the question literally. The attached notebook generates a sequence of status graphs, rather than a moving point on a single graph. But I think it serves the purpose.
