Ted, Analytic continuation in Laplace-transform space generates these critters in physical space. (Anyway, that was my first exposure to them.) A handy intro appears in http://mathworld.wolfram.com/FractionalDerivative.html By the way, I've not spent enough time with mathworld to vouch for it's accuracy, but it looks like a very cool site.
