Yes we do, we use the Cardono Complex Variable Package and the Draw

That is precisely what I mean when I said souped up calculator (now 
perhaps I am regretting it). This is a fundamental issue, which I was 
taught in my sophomore year computer aided design class. The Computer 
does not design, the engineer does. In my opinion one can be an expert 
programmer in C++, Python ..etc but unless one is familiar with the 
essential concepts of Mathematics, Mathematica or any other CAS is 
useless. As for me, Mathematica to some degree allows me to be able to 
do stuff purely on an intuitive level (just like pencil and papper), 
without being bogged down in the minutia of defining types and other 
crap like that. Apart from other standard languages, Mathematica is at 
its best when it is used as a R&D tool.
