I agree with this explanation.  But there is a fundamental question:
why should I go through all those gyrations to do such a trivial
simplification, which a C undergraduate student is supposed to
know?

Over 99% of my personal time with Mathematica in research
work has to do with substitutions that dont substitute and
simplifications that dont simplify.  And the documentation does
not help in either case.
