I don't know whether this is relevant, but here goes: From time to time
I had the same problem under Windows, and it was always due to a font
problem. (On Windows, I was using Adobe Type Manager, and somehow
whenever I installed a new version of Mathematica, it didn't recognize
where the fonts were; and the solution was always to uninstall the
existing Mathematica fonts, then copy the Mathematica fonts from within
the Mathematica SystemFiles subtree to the normal place for font files.)
