For those interested in this question in a broader context, Apple's
attractive and informative publication "Human Interface Guidelines: The
Apple Desktop Interface" (Addison Wesley Publishing Company, Copyright
1987, Third Printing, July 1988), discusses "selecting" and "selection"
on pages 29 and 106-117. Its Index has 25 entries under those two
headings. The entry for "selections, extending or shrinking" points to
page 109 and the entry for "selections, scrolling after" points to page
52.

Apple did things right and documented them meticulously in those days --
as did Mathematica.
