Linux always opening new front-end

This is not really a bug per se but it is very annoying that if one
opens a file from GNOME file browser then for each new opened file a
new front-end pops up. Is there a way to tell Mathematica to check if
there is already a running front-end and/or kernel before opening a
new one?
