Nicola, I have observed this consistently after the last major update of Snow leopard from Apple about 4-5 months ago if my memory serves me. I almost always find that after aborting the first evaluation when it appears slow and then re-evaluating the problem disappears. I presume WRI is aware of this behaviour and will fix it in the next much anticipated release. Cheers ....
