I guess it depends to what purpose. I am learning Mathematica myself and I am mostly interested in applying Mathematica to problems in physics. I want to solve equations using numerical methods. For me, I have found very useful first of all the Mathematica documentation. Joining a group like this is very helpful as well, there is a lot of people that is all the time willing to help. I have purchased "Mathematica Navigator" by Ruskeepaa and "Numerical and Analytical Methods for Scientists and Engineers, Using Mathematica" by Daniel Dubin. I think if you want to go deeper maybe the series by Michael Trott "The Mathematica Guidebook"
