Different learners have different needs.  But if you're starting from 
a level where you already have some technical or math background in 
other areas, then Heikki Ruskeepaa's "Mathematica Navigator" is a 
highly rated text as well as detailed reference on Mathematica.  
Selected sections from Stan Wagon's "Mathematica in Action" also give 
a good readable introduction to Mathematica.
