Word has really crappy support for graphics.  Your best bet is to right click on the graphic in Mathematica, Save Graphic As, and choose PNG.  You can then use use the saved file in your Word document.  PNG is a pretty decent graphic format that supports transparency.  PNG is still a bitmap format, so you will be limited in how much you can zoom; if this is a problem, you may have to use Export[Render[...]] and play with the resolution settings in Render.
