On my win7 64bit with versi=F3n 8.01 64-bit it is:
In[5]:= $MaxNumber

Out[5]= 1.233433712981650*10^323228458

Which coincides with the value suggested in the help:

A typical value for $MaxNumber is around 10^323228429.
