Map[Replace[#, {X, y___} -> {y}] &,
Split[ReplaceRepeated[
l, {x___, a, b, a, y___} -> {x, X, y}], #2 =!= X &]]

Map[DeleteCases[#, X] &,
Split[ReplaceRepeated[
l, {x___, a, b, a, y___} -> {x, X, y}], #2 =!= X &]]
