epsf option for psfix

I am a little confused about the use of the epsf option with psfix;
I am hoping you'll be able to clear it up.

My understanding about this option was that it would insert a raster
image of a graphic into the PostScript code. But as far as I can
tell, the only difference between a graphic file not treated with
epsf and one that has is parameters of the bounding box,
the margins, and the absence of showpage. The confusion, I think,
is with the definition of Encapsulated PostScript.

My motivation for this is that I want to import Mathematica graphics
generated on a Sun workstation into Word for Windows on a PC.
Word for Windows comes with an Encapsulated PostScript filter, but
my experience has been that when I import a graphic that was run
through psfix with the epsf option set all I see is a small portion
of the PostScript code; I expected to see a raster image. So,
what's up with that :-)?

Thanks in advance.
