I would like to seal this thread with one final note. The issue of a Word-
to-Mathematica connection has aroused a lot of interest and discussion. It
seems that the mention of Microsoft brings out strong opinions in everyone,
pro or con.
Let me reiterate points from my original post:
- This product does not represent a shift in WRI's development plans. We
are adding a useful piece of functionality, not backing away from our own
front end development.
- We chose Microsoft Word because it is the market leader and because it
has a powerful embedded language. We are not entering into some sort of
alliance with Microsoft. (Do you notice that nobody had anything to say
when we shipped a link to Excel?)
- We will consider other word processors as their technology permits and
the market indicates.
It has been suggested that we make this product compatible with Word 2.0
for Windows (the previous version of Word on that platform). Although it is
certainly possible to write _a_ link to Mathematica in Word 2.0, it is not
possible to write _this_ link.
If you have any questions or comments about this product, or possible links
to other software, please send mail to mathlink at wri.com.
Sincerely,
Todd Gayley
WRI
