One way, obviously, is to open the files in the local Front End.
Of course this is not easily automated.

Another way, if both systems are unix, is to have the local file-system
remotely mounted on the machine running the kernel. Then use the
SetDirectory[] command to set the working directory to where your
files are located. 

Doubtless there is a MathLink solution also.
Perhaps there should be a MathLink `mini-Front-End' whose job
is simply to provide a file-browser and input/output facility.
