I have seen such plots simply done on a triangle.  Of course this was
in the case that x+y+z=1 and x >= 0, y >= 0, and z >= 0.  I thought
that it was pretty clear what was happening in the problem.  These
were plots of the dynamics of bi-linear operators if I remember
correctly.
