Q: how to plot contour or density plot on a curved surface?

in Mathematica 3.0, is it possible to plot a density or contour plot
of a (real, scalar valued) function defined on a curved surface (that
i would dislay with ParametricPlot3D) like a sphere or a torus rather
than on the plane?  if so, how is this done?
