The fonts need to be in a directory that resides on the font path of the X server of the machine where you are actually sitting. Section 4.5 of the Mathematica 3.0 System Administrator's Guide addresses the issues of fonts under X Window. Subsection 4.5.5 seems to indicate that a local installation of fonts is permissible if it is for the purposes of displaying an X client running remotely on another host. However, you can also avoid the local installation through the use of a font server. See Chapter 6 of the _X Window System User's Guide_ by Valerie Quercia and Tim O'Reilly (ISBN 1-56592-015-5) for a good discussion of how to handle fonts under X. -- P.J.
