copy the fonts directory (e.g. /usr/local/mathematica/SystemFiles/Fonts/X)
to your _local_ machine, i.e., where your x server runs.  then issue
the command ``xset fp+ <the directory where you copied the fonts to>''.
after that, the x11 frontend should be able to run.

alternatively, you could set up an x11 font server on the machine where
the original mathematica fonts are installed.  email me if you need
more information on this!
