Martin,
FrameBox might help - the frame adjusts to the text size:

Show[Graphics3D[
    Text[FrameBox[
          FormBox[StyleBox[MakeBoxes[\[Rho] = k r^2, TraditionalForm],
              FontFamily -> "Times", FontSize -> 72], TraditionalForm]] //
        DisplayForm, {0, 0, 0}]]]

You will find it at menu>Edit>Expression Input
