newbie needs help

Just starting with Mathematica and this is a weird problem that probably has
an easy solution:
When I type certain keys on the keyboard, the screen shows something totally
different. For example, hitting the left square bracket gives an @ symbol.
[=@ )
Hitting a shift-9 to get a left paren gives a capital letter.
H, I think.
The keyboard works normally in other programs liike Word, etc.
Is this a simple configuration issue?
