Well, clearly this has something to do with your computer, not Mathematica.

And re-installing Win2K over an existing installation will not have any
effect -- it retains all the existing DLLs, as just one example, and any
corrupted executables etc. remain.

Why not sit at any other computer for a few minutes to satisfy yourself that
the problem is not Mathematica?

Have you checked for viruses? Have you recently installed a new application?
Low on memory? Low on spare hard drive space?
