That one sounds rather dangerous to me! What would seem to be really useful is a better NotebookAutoSave option. The current NotebookAutoSave merely allows one to have the notebook saved automatically after each "piece of output". My experience is, however, that Mathematica crashes, with consequent notebook loss, occur most often when applying complicated formatting to text or text-like cells (often when in-line cells are included there); for that, the existing NotebookAutoSave does little. An option to save periodically -- and preferably with a parameter to say how many most-recent versions to save -- would ameliorate that sort of loss of work.
