Very disturbing! Start a new session. Try anything simple, like 3
shift-enter. Don't write a semicolon after the "3". You should now have
this input cell with a cell label, like
In[1]:= 3
An output cell should appear immediately below with a cell label:
Out[1]= 3
If you don't get this, you're in deep trouble. Please attach the notebook
and send me a mail.
