Error password protecting webMath w/ Tomcat

i have a few folders containing webmathematica jsp's on my tomcat
server that i am trying to password protect. i am using a  web.xml file
located in the WEB-INF folder which would lie in whatever directory i
want to protect. webmathematica jsp's are working fine under normal
circumstances. password-protection also works fine when not used to
protect jsp files. but when i combine the two, i get java error 500.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
