I don't know about your warning message, but the white hand is probably 
caused by your Linix Window Manager and the NumLock being ON.   That 
happens to me running Mathematica 5.01 RedHat 9.0 with the KDE window manager.  
It is documented in the Getting Started with Mathematica 5 manual under 
Troubleshooting on Unix/Linux.
