Hi Lea,
did you try to remove any references to Mathematica in the Win Register?
In the tree structure of the register something of the kind:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\
                         |
               SOFTWARE\
                         |
           Wolfram Research\
                         |
               Mathematica\
                         |
                    4.0.0.0
