since you didn't mention specifically I assume that you are working on
MS-Windows.
Assuming that, it seems that you have bad assignments in your registry file.
After uninstalling Mathematica you may use a commercial software that take
care of the registry file (system mechanic is a very good one). You may also
find other alternatves for that.
If you feel comfortable enough with editing the registry file yourself,
delete all occurences of Mathematica in the registry file.
Only after that re-install Mathematica.
