It appears that something similar happens with Mac OS X. That is
when I checked the file /Library/Mathematica/mathpass it has
several entries.

I am not seeing any problem with using either version 5.2 or 6
as a result of the password information being appended. However,
I've not used a version of Mathematica that had an explicit
expiration date.
