I must have been doing something wrong earlier.  It seems to work however it only prints the equation number.  That's ok if the equation is in the same section of a book.  However if I refer to an equation in another chapter or section, even though I have chapter.section.equation set up, it only prints the equation number.  Know what, I'm not particular.  Maybe as I learn more about style sheets I'll figure out how to configure  it to do that.
