Bert, One solution would be to make a palette with your required characters. Another would be to select the US-International keyboard layout in the Regional and Language control panel (tab Languages/Details). Can't try this myself by lack of a Belgian keyboard. When buying a computer I always choose a standard US-International keyboard. Accented characters are easily obtained in the corresponding layout using the dead key system of 'a, `a, ~n, for =E1, =E0 and =F1 etc. You have to get used to pressing the space bar after quotes if you really want quotes and not accents, though. It's a pity the move from 6 to 7 is not faultless, but I'm sure the Wolfram guys will repair this once made aware of the problem. I would be inclined to say that using the words "horrible interface" for a bug that has impact on a small minority of users is overstating the problem.
