This sounds similar to what my user is experiencing, except that in his
case restarting Mathematica does not fix it. I don't know of any
connection to the Documentation Center (but will investigate). It has
happened to him a few times when he has simply left Mathematica open and
gone to class, and is not even there using Mathematica. It will be
messed up when he returns.
