Was it only the last demo you tried that finally loaded and ran?  If so, 
evidently the problem is that the CDF Player plug-in (or, I assume, in 
your case, the Mathematica kernel itself) had not completed loading.

I used to see such delays when the plug-in was first released, but since 
version 8.0.1 was released, I don't get long hangs. (This is Windows XP 
Pro, 32-bit).
