I'd just like to comment on the title of your post, "Learning 
Mathematica with neat projects", because I think so many people try to 
learn Mathematica by immediately trying to solve their specialised 
problem - whatever that might be.

As you imply, you really need to start with some relatively simple 
problems that you can explore, and perhaps extend, before focusing on 
the problem(s) at hand. Working this way, a newcomer will find his 
imagination filling with ideas for new ways to use the software, rather 
than just feeling relief when his project works!
