Programmatically select an inputfield?

Does anybody know if there is a way to select a control (an
inputfield) programmatically? Clicking is of no use to me for this
particular application. It might be a problem that the control is
positioned in a cell which is docked, and therefore unselectable.

I'd appreciate any advice.
