Hi Paul,

The method I use is to have another notebook open and use it as a  
clipboard.

This window can be minimised to save screen space and persists as long  
as the current Mathematica session lasts.

It can also be saved if you wish with a filename referencing the  
primary notebook in order to finish work later.

There is an added benefit that the "Clipboard" can be used to evaluate  
expressions and test options without "messing up" the primary notebook.
