I'm trying to launch the Mathematica 8 front end in Ubuntu 11.01.
Actually, this Ubuntu is in a virtual machine being run by Parallels for
Desktop on a Mac running OS X 10.6.8.

As soon as I execute the command "mathematica" I'm thrown back to the
Ubuntu log-on screen. Ad infinitum.

I find no shortcut for the front end. (I believe one is installed for
Mathematica 7 under Linux, but I'm unsure about Mathematica 8).

At the command line, the command "math" does launch the kernel.

The Linux virtual machine has 4 GB ram allocated to it.

Any ideas how to fix?
