motifps and window positioning

We are running MMA 2.1 on an HP9000/750 under HP-UX 8.07. With Release
2.1, x11ps has been replaced by motifps. It has some nice bells and
whistles, especially for animation, albeit being sort of slow.

However, it puts all graphics windows in exactly the same place on the
screen. I can control where that position is by editing motifps.geometry
in /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/Motifps, but it places all graphics windows
either at +0+0 (default) or somewhere else as specified (I like "+10-10"),
all exactly overlapping. Thus unless the user explicitly moves a window
it gets buried by the next graphic.

Is there a "give the WM some HINTS but let it decide" resource? Am I
missing something? x11ps did the right thing in this regard.

This occurs with at least the following window managers: mwm (the Motif
1.1 version from ICS running on a Sun 4 and the Motif 1.1 version
supplied by HP running on a HP9000/750), olwm (OpenWindows 2.0 version
and home-built from X11R4 patchlevel 18, both running on a Sun 4) and
the "local" window manager NCDwm running inside a NCD 17c X-terminal.
