This is incorrect..... I'm using a sparc20/61 running NeXTStep 3.3  
o/s and my results were as such:

Timing[N[Sin[1/2],2500]][[1]] -> 5.18333 Second

Timing[N[Pi,10001]][[1]] -> 7.23333 Second
